The presented publication contains selected parts from the didactics of mathematics, which are the gateway to its further study. It focuses on selected theories of learning, the process of structuring mathematical knowledge, on cognitive processes in the development of mathematical concepts, on the cognitive process in general and specifically focused on numerical and geometric ideas and concepts. It also contains the theoretical foundations of selected teaching methods, such as problem-based, project-based and discovery teaching.The publication is primarily intended for higher education in mathematics teaching, but it can appeal to any reader interested in mathematics and its education.
